Roles
A role is the kind of page an entry is. An entry with no role is a chapter.
Set a role in the navigator
Section titled “Set a role in the navigator”- Right-click the entry.
- Select
Role for this entry…. - Select a role.
Set a role in the book note

- [[Preface]] `matter`
The roles
Section titled “The roles”| Note | Role | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| A chapter | None | The chapter opening from the design. |
| The title of a group of chapters | part |
A page of its own, with no other layout. |
| A preface, an afterword or the acknowledgements | matter |
Plain prose, with no drop cap. |
| A copyright page | copyright |
Small type at the foot of the page. |
| A dedication | dedication |
Centered, down the page. |
| An epigraph | epigraph |
A narrow column, down the page. The last of several paragraphs is set right. |
The contents lists chapters, parts and matter. It does not list the other three.
The first part or chapter is page 1. The pages before it are numbered in roman. The position of an entry decides this, not its role.
The chapter opening applies to chapters only. To style another role, use Custom CSS, for example on section.part.
Your own role
Section titled “Your own role”Any other name is a role too, for example prologue. Orca sets the entry as plain prose and lists it in the contents. The name is the class of the section, so your CSS can style it.
- [[Prologue]] `prologue`
section.prologue {
text-align: center;
}
In the navigator, type the name into the list of roles and select it. A name starts with a lower-case letter, and the rest is lower-case letters, digits and hyphens.
Title page and contents
Section titled “Title page and contents”Orca writes these two pages, so their entries need no link. If you add a link, Orca ignores the note.
- `title-page`
- `contents`
To add one in the navigator, select Add to this book on the book, and then select New generated section….
